The Benefits of Remedial Massage

Stress reduction

The importance of relaxation and well-being can’t be underestimated and one of the most noted effects of massage is a greater feeling of calm and relaxation. It reduces both emotional and physical stress, which is why it is often recommended in stress and anxiety treatment programs. Massage can encourage the release of endorphins – the wonderful chemicals that give us the feel-good factor. Conversely, those nasty stress inducing hormones such as norepinephrine, adrenaline and cortisol are reduced.

Releasing muscle tension and pain

Good massage techniques are a wonderful way of releasing trigger points, stretching and elongating muscles and breaking down adhesions. By increasing the blood flow to the tissues and releasing the tension, massage not only helps alleviate the pain, but can also help eliminate toxins and oxygenate the cells.

Increased joint mobility

By releasing muscle tension around joints, the range of movement in the joint can be increased. When a joint is no longer hampered by stiffness, muscle function can return to support and improve joint movement.

Encourages blood flow

Remedial massage encourages blood flow to the tissues being treated by stimulating the circulatory system. Increasing blood flow to the area helps to speed up the healing process and repair damaged tissue.

Improves sleep

Alleviating stress and reducing cortisol levels along with increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine, remedial massage can help you to get a better nights sleep

What does remedial massage do?

Remedial massage therapy uses a variety of soft tissue techniques to decrease muscle tension.  This can help to reduce muscular pain that is coming from this tension.  Your remedial massage therapist may use things like trigger point release, cupping, dry needling, rock blades and other sensory tools to help settle down your aches and pains.

How long should I book for an appointment?

If you have a specific area that you want your therapist to address such as calves or neck and upper back then a 30 or 45 minute appointment should be sufficient.  However if you are wanting more than one area looked at, it is best to book for 60 minutes so that each area can be addressed properly.

Should I have a massage or physio?

This is a really common question and can be difficult to answer and really comes down to whether or not you think you need your condition to be assessed and or diagnosed.  A key difference between massage therapy and physiotherapy is that massage therapist cannot diagnose conditions that might be causing your pain.  If you are stiff and sore, say from too many hours at your desk, then a remedial massage can be a great place to start.  One of the great advantages of choose us for your remedial massage is that our therapist will refer you to physiotherapy if they feel you need this.

How far do I have to disrobe for my massage?

Only as far as you are comfortable and your therapist will use towels to cover those areas that are not being worked on.  To massage effectively, your therapist will need skin access to the areas you are wanting to be worked on and therefore you will only need to remove clothes from these areas.  Underwear will always be left on.

Does massage therapy hurt? And will I be sore afterwards?

To release tight muscles and reduce tension may involve some temporary pain during the massage.  This is an unfortunate but necessary part of getting the relief you are after.   How much pressure is used and how much it hurts is completely in your control though so let your therapist know if you are finding things a little much.

It can be possible to feel quite tired and sore for a day or so after your massage, particularly if you have not had one for a while or it is your first time.  How you felt after your massage is always really great information to discuss with your therapist at your next visit.

I have private health insurance for massage therapy, do you accept this and how does this work?

We have a HICAPS machine at the clinic meaning that we are able to process your health insurance claim for you at the time of payment for your consultation.  To do this, we do need your health insurance card (or digital version).  If you do not have your card with you, we are able to provide you with all of the necessary details for you to be able to claim this back from your health fund yourself.
