Online Physiotherapy Consultations

We are living in an increasingly digital world.  Australia is currently in the middle of the COVID-19 outbreak which has meant for many of our patients, visiting us in the clinic for face to face consultations is not possible.  This might be because they are choosing to self-isolate, they may have recently travelled back from overseas and be forced to quarantine or they may be feeling unwell (either with or without COVID-19).

Out of the Box Physiotherapy is excited to announce that we have launched our Online Physiotherapy Service.  This service is available for both new patients and existing patients.  Just because you cannot make it to the clinic does not mean your physiotherapy treatment and rehabilitation exercises have to stop.

We use online software that provides a secure video connection between us as practitioners and yourself, wherever you are in the world.  To use online physiotherapy services, you need to have access to an internet connection, a device with microphone and camera (such as a laptop, smart phone or tablet).

We email you a link and all you have to do to join the video consultation is click on the provided link.

As a new service to our clinic we are currently allowing 45-60 minutes for these consultations so that we do not have to feel rushed, particularly if we do experience any technology issues.

In response to the current health challenge that Australia is facing, on March 29 2020 the federal government announced further funding that will allow telehealth (online physiotherapy) consultations to be billable to Medicare in certain circumstances.  We have also been advised from the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) that in April 2020 private health insurance rebates will be available for online physiotherapy consultations.  We will update this page as more information on available rebates becomes available from the relevant parties.

In the meantime, as new service, and so that we can help as many people as possible during this difficult time, online physiotherapy consultations are available for $50.

There will be some conditions where a traditional in clinic consultation may be more useful but we would be more than happy to discuss this with you via either email, video call or phone call.

What should I expect during my Online Physio consultation?

Just like a traditional in clinic consultation, your physiotherapist will take some time to get to know you and your problem.  This will usually involve targeted questioning about your pain / injury.  This information is vital in forming a diagnosis and once the interview phase of the consultation is completed your physiotherapist will either given you their thoughts on what might be the issue or at least an action plan on how to achieve this diagnosis.

The next phase of the consultation will be to put into place a management plan which will typically involve specific and appropriate exercises to help your condition.  We then provide these exercises to you in PDF and video format for so that you are really clear on how they are executed.  Your physiotherapist will run you through this program during the call.  Finally, you will have the opportunity to ask questions of your physiotherapy before the call is ended and your physiotherapist will advise what the next follow up steps are (such as when the next consultation will be done).

Can existing patients switch to Online Physio?

Yes, in most cases a review consultation can be done via an online consultation.  If during your course of treatment you become unwell or need to isolate, then booking an online consultation will be a great way to make sure that your rehabilitation remains on track.  During your online physiotherapy consultation we have full access to your clinical notes as well as access to your current exercise program.  We can then review these exercises and upgrade your change your program as needed based on your progress.
